On one of the missions I carried out in one of the needy communities in my country, I had the opportunity to meet a family that was only composed of children, as they didn't know where their parents were. The oldest sister among these 4 siblings was only 12 years old and had to leave school at the age of 6 to take care of her younger siblings. She told me that in the mornings, she would go out to sell juices and sandwiches to the workers on construction sites. Later, she would return home, cook for her siblings, and send them off to school. When she heard about a medical clinic taking place, she walked for 2 hours early in the morning with her siblings to reach us. Upon learning that minors couldn't be attended to without an adult representing them, she sat down and shared that with us so that we could provide assistance.
At that moment, the community leader took responsibility and offered them support from the community. As a medical team, we supplied everything related to medicines and medical checkups, and each of us contributed to help them with food and some clothes.

The most fulfilling aspect of life is pursuing something you are truly passionate about, and for me, that passion lies in connecting with my patients. Last December, I encountered a family of three – a mother, a father, and their baby. When I inquired about their visit to the clinic, my heart sank. The four-month-old baby had been suffering from a fever for over three days, and financial constraints had prevented them from seeking medical help. As I tried to assist by identifying nearby hospitals and recommending a pediatrician, the mother shared the challenges they faced – lack of funds for transportation and consultation fees at public hospitals.
The realization hit hard when she mentioned a fee of 250 Dominican pesos, equivalent to just $4 for me. Putting myself in her shoes, with a five-month-old baby at home, I couldn't fathom the frustration she and her husband must have felt. At the same time, the mother was taking medication for migraines, and the effects were inadvertently passing to the baby through breastfeeding. It stirred my heart and soul, compelling me to educate mothers on the importance of understanding the impact of medication while breastfeeding. I found myself extending congratulations for their dedication to breastfeeding and seeking ways to offer greater support to these resilient families.
