"I was a medical intern for one of Dr. Pride's programs in the Dominican Republic. The experience I had was very eye-opening. It was my first time working with a huge group of people that are my age within a healthcare career. I’m usually the youngest one in the workplace, so it was an interesting perspective to work with peers and see how different they are in comparison to working with an older population. Working within the DR, I got to see how much Spanish I actually learned and could utilize from my high school and college courses. Not only that, but I got to see how different our healthcare systems are. I also got to see how truly blessed we are to be able to know things, such as our own date of birth or personal or familial medical history. Just seeing and experiencing some of the day-to-day living really made me take a step back and appreciate all that I have, the knowledge and resources I have been blessed to receive, and how accessible things are here in America. Honestly, this trip gave me the motivation that I needed to finish out my undergrad degree in December and continue onto grad school because making healthcare accessible internationally is something I got a glimpse of and helped with this summer. And this trip just assured me that I want to continue to do this line of work. I am extremely blessed to be a part of this organization, not only with this past summer's internship but now as the Director of Community Outreach. From the staff and clinics to the experience, career building, and benefits, I highly recommend working and traveling with the International Health Alliance."
