IHA internships are designed to provide comprehensive insights and hands-on experience in the medical and dental fields.

We offer advanced dental training and continuing education where you get hands-on experience shadowing a skilled, experienced doctor. Our courses combine live shadowing, formal education, and educational content so that you can take your skills education to the next level. Primary training opportunities cover crowns, implants, and more.

International Dental Shadowing Program

The primary goal of the International Dental Shadowing Program is to provide aspiring dental professionals with an opportunity to gain hands-on experience, observe dental practices in a different cultural context, and enhance their understanding of global oral healthcare.

Duration

3 Weeks: 2 virtual and 1 week on the ground in Dominican Republic

Location

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic with Dr. Carol Gallego

Program

Orientation and Cultural Immersion

  • Introduction to the local culture and customs.
  • Overview of the healthcare system in the host country.
  • Language basics, if applicable. (Additional Spanish Lessons with native speaker.)

Introduction to Dental Practice

  • Overview of the dental facility and its staff.
  • Introduction to common dental procedures.
  • Review of infection control and safety protocols.

Observation and Shadowing

  • Daily observation of dental procedures, including but not limited to:
    Dental cleanings
    Fillings
    Extractions
    Root canals
    Prosthodontic work

    Dental esthetics (Venners, Zoom, Philips whitening) Note: Procedures will depend on if volunteer has completed successfully the sponsorship of local patients in need.

  • Implantology note: Procedures will depend if volunteer has completed successfully the sponsorship of local patients in need.

  • Bone regeneration (bone graft)

  • Note: Procedures will depend if volunteer has completed successfully the sponsorship of local patients in need.

Hands-On Experience

  • Limited hands-on experience under supervision.

  • Basic dental skills training (e.g., practicing dental impressions or sterilization procedures).

Seminars and Workshops

  • (Additional and optional add-ons selected by the participant, prices are detail with each workshop and or lecture)

  • Guest lectures by local dental professionals on specific topics.

  • Workshops on relevant subjects (e.g., dental technology, community dentistry).

Patient Interactions

  • Opportunities for interaction with patients (subject to privacy and consent).

  • Patient education sessions.

Case Discussions

  • Weekly case discussions to review and analyze interesting cases.

Cultural Activities

  • Organize cultural outings or events to enhance participants’ overall experience.

Eligibility Criteria​

Student or recent graduate with an interest in the dental field.

Must be fluent in English.

Legally able to travel outside of the United States.

Application Process

  • Submission of a resume, statement of intent, and letters of recommendation.

  • Interview process to assess candidates’ suitability and expectations.
